1. Aims and Scope

The journal is aiming to advance the numismatic research focused on the region of the Balkan Peninsula and Southeastern Europe, where Bulgarian lands build the natural geographic core. Since the underlying historical political or economic processes include much broader geographical range, all related studies are highly welcome.

The addressed topics involve the whole diversity of the numismatic spectrum:

  • coin minting and circulation,
  • economy,
  • trade,
  • finances,
  • traditional and new methodologies in numismatic studies,
  • archaeometric studies on coins,
  • digital numismatics,
  • cultural heritage preservation,
  • coin forgeries, etc.

The chronological scope is naturally set on the time after the invention of the coins – from Antiquity and the Middle Ages up to the modern era, although all knowledge about diverse forms of trade and exchange from the prehistory onwards are also to be considered.

2. Journal History

The initiative for the creation of BulgNJ goes back to December 2019, when on a meeting of the editorial team the general vision and mission of the journal were established: to popularize the numismatic research on Southeastern Europe, providing to Bulgarian and international experts a freely accessible online platform, in accordance with high quality scientific and publication standards.

Thus, BulgNJ was established as the first exclusively online journal for numismatics in Bulgaria and the neighbouring region, offering free open acces online content to its authors and readers.

The first issue appeared in March 2023. Since then it has been published biannually.

The language of publication in BulgNJ is Bulgarian or English. The journal is aimed to provide bilingual standards, where all publications should have a summary in English
